Who is Healing?  What is Healing?

In the next weeks I hope to answer a few questions one might have about the very existence of Jesus.  To really get to that point though we have to understand a specific reality of Jesus and what He is.  Now we have pointed out that He is fully God and fully man all throughout this beginning Chapter.  Indeed we have dug into the very being of Jesus.  But mere words can’t do Him justice. (Especially English words. I have been amazed at how many times I have been left speechless in just chapter 1.)  So we need to be shown concepts to help us encompass the whole of Jesus.  Let’s look at one such concept.

Mark 1:29-34 CSB
[29] As soon as they left the synagogue, they went into Simon and Andrew’s house with James and John. [30] Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. [31] So he went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve them. [32] When evening came, after the sun had set, they brought to him all those who were sick and demon-possessed. [33] The whole town was assembled at the door, [34] and he healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

Now this is easily overlooked like so many other things we’ve found in this chapter so far.  I want you to notice what Jesus does not do here.

The scene starts with them entering what is sort of a base of operations in Capernaum.  (Reference Mark 2:1, 3:20, 9:33, and 10:10). This is Simon’s and Andrew’s house.  Simon’s mother-in-law is sick and Jesus takes her hand, lifts her up and the fever left her.  Jesus never spoke or at the very least anything that was said Mark didn’t feel the need to inform us.  No healing words, no incantations or spells which were so often lauded by others of the time and much to our shame still today.  Simply compassion and a touch and she was made well.

Why is that important?

Because I don’t think it couldn’t have happened.  As I read through the Bible and I look at the aspects of Jesus I recognize that this is a concept of what Jesus is, as much as it is of who He is.  While I may fail at explaining this hopefully I can get you close enough that you’ll see for yourself.  Here we go.

Isaiah 53:5 CSB
[5] But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.

Revelation 21:4-5 CSB
[4] He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. [5] Then the one seated on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new.” He also said, “Write, because these words are faithful and true.”

Isaiah speaks of the, in this instance; upcoming atonement of Christ.  (Interestingly enough he speaks in the past and present tense.)  Christ on the cross, the ultimate sacrifice, the payment for our sin.

Revelation speaks of eventual results of that atonement.

Studying the worldly and the spiritual in the Bible can be a daunting task.  When you add time as seen by God and by man into the mix.  It may permanently warp you.  Nevertheless we must touch on this very thing here at least briefly.  For us relating to the above passages, Isaiah is past and Revelation is yet to come.  But for God who is timeless these things are happening, will happen, and have happened, all concurrently for Him.  That’s a big picture we can’t even wrap our heads around.  That’s important because of the Fully God part of Jesus.  Because of the timelessness of God these two passages are part of the whole of Jesus, who and what He is even though at this point in the story they are yet to be.  At this point in the story Christ on the cross and it’s results are yet to come but because Jesus is God they are part of Him.

My brain hurts thinking that through.

Let me make my point today with one final passage and little explanation.

Mark 5:25-34 CSB
[25] Now a woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years [26] had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. [27] Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothing. [28] For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I’ll be made well.” [29] Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. [30] Immediately Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” [31] His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” [32] But he was looking around to see who had done this. [33] The woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. [34] “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”

We’ll dig into this when we get to chapter 5.  I gave you the whole story for study but I only want to point out verse 28 today.

Mark 5:28 CSB
[28] For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I’ll be made well.”

This woman knew exactly what we see in our passages today.

Jesus is Healing!

Because of who He is, healing will happen with His touch, guaranteed!

How could He touch everyone and everything at the same time.  Show them how much He loves them, then die for them, be raised again defeating death giving them/us the free gift of eternal life.  That will touch you.

Anyone can have this free gift.  As with any gift for it to be yours you must accept it.  Believe in Jesus.  Please don’t wait.

Romans 10:9 CSB
[9] If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Love in Christ,

Colby
