So Jesus has been out away from everyone praying. Peter and the disciples go and find him. When they do Peter says “everyone is looking for you.”. It’s almost as if Peter has set an expectation along with others that Jesus has to be where they are so that they can guide things along. Now I understand that I might be reading a bit much into this. But I want you to see how I’m digging here. I’m trying to get into Peter’s head. What’s he thinking. The reason I’m doing that is because of how Jesus responds.
Mark 1:38 CSB
[38] And he said to them, “Let’s go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach there too. This is why I have come.”
Jesus is clear. This is what we’re doing. This is why I have come. This response crushes any rebuttal Peter might make. If we were Peter we might be left stuttering…
Bu…bu…but the people back there!
The thing is that Jesus knows something that Peter hasn’t gotten yet. Ok… 😂 Lol. Let’s be honest. Jesus knows a lot that Peter hasn’t gotten yet and us too, but that’s another issue for another day.
Jesus knows the power of the word and the power of the Word. You see the word was inspired by the Word.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 CSB
[16] All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, [17] so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
John 1:1,14,17 CSB
[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[14] The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
[17] for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
The power of the word repairs the soul and draws us to the Word. We will see tangible effects of this in the upcoming verses.
Mark 1:45 CSB
[45] Yet he went out and began to proclaim it widely and to spread the news, with the result that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. But he was out in deserted places, and they came to him from everywhere.
They came to Him from everywhere.
Mark 2:1-2 CSB
[1] When he entered Capernaum again after some days, it was reported that he was at home. [2] So many people gathered together that there was no more room, not even in the doorway, and he was speaking the word to them.
There was no more room.
Now there are a lot of lessons in our text today. But my heart says to give an obvious one. Jesus is teaching the disciples how the word’s soul repairing power draws people to the Word. It’s a natural reaction to the fall of man. The fall left us with a hole in our soul and just like a mother’s soft hands wiping away a child’s tears after a fall leaves that child wanting more of moms attention. We who have read the word and felt the soul redeeming power of the Word are likewise craving more of the Fathers attention. More of that redeeming power.
The power of the touch of God!
That’s what the word is… The touch of God.
It repairs the soul by
Revealing Truth: The Bible reveals God’s truth about Himself, our fallen state, and His salvation offered through Jesus Christ. The revelation of truth will challenge and convict us, leading us to recognize our need for a Savior if we are willing.
It convicts and Leads to Repentance: The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to expose and convince us of our sin and our need for repentance and faith in Jesus.
It shows God’s Love and Grace: The Bible, specifically the Gospel message, demonstrates God’s immense love and grace through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Understanding this love will draw us to respond in faith and desire a relationship with Him.
It provides Guidance and Direction: The Bible serves as a guide for life, showing the path to follow and how to live according to God’s will. With that guidance we will see the benefits of following Jesus and living a life that is pleasing to God.
It offers Transformation: The Bible’s message has the power to transform us from the inside out, leading us to become more like Christ. As we study and apply the Word, we begin to reflect Jesus in our character and actions.
It connects us with God: Engaging with the Bible strengthens a believer’s connection and relationship with God. As we delve deeper into the Word, we feel a sense of God’s presence and hear His voice speaking through the Scriptures.
In essence, the power of the Word, working in conjunction with the Holy Spirit, draws us to salvation in Jesus Christ.
Now I don’t want anyone to think any of this is original. Every part of this message has been preached from the beginning, all the way back to Genesis 1:1. If you understand Ephesians 1:4 even before that. This is just a modified version of an old truth.
Let’s bring on the application.
For the Christian. Jesus came to preach there too. Be like Jesus! Go! Preach! The sermon is the Bible! Maybe start with Genesis 1 God made it all. Maybe move on to Genesis 3 we broke it! Then try Romans 3 to point to our need for a savior. Move on to John 3:16 and 17, show them the Saviour. Ask them if they’d like to accept Him. Don’t stop there though. Stick with them and help them out.
Matthew 28:18-20 CSB
[18] Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. [19] Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
For the non Christian. I guarantee you have a soul problem. That doesn’t mean you’re a bad person or that you’re not loving and kind. It means you are like the rest of us. Broken by the fall and the separation of man and God that it caused. God is seeking you. He wants to repair that soul in you. He wants to do it personally through a relationship with Jesus.
John 3:16-18 CSB
[16] For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. [18] Anyone who believes in him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.
Because of who He is in me and who I am in Him, I love you. I want that soul of yours to be all fixed up. Will you accept Jesus today? Call a Christian friend today. You know one. Ask them to tell you about Jesus. I’m praying for you.
Love in Christ,
Colby
